Thermopylae was a composite clipper ship built in 1868 by Walter Hood & Co of Aberdeen. It was designed for China tea trade and set a speed record on her maiden voyage to Melbourne of 63 days which still stands. In 1872, Thermopylae defeated the Cutty Sark in a race from Shanghai to London, completing the journey in 115 days.
John Richard Perry operated a gallery out of Shelton's in York Beach, Maine for many years. He retired to Tennessee.
