Merchant was born and raised in Gloucester, MA and studied law at Boston University Law School. He practiced law in Gloucester and took an intense interest in painting in the late 50’s through his participation in portrait groups at the Rockport Art Association and later the North Shore Arts Association in East Gloucester. He traveled with friends to the artist colony of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. In the 60’s and 70’s, Merchant painted hundreds of Cape Ann residents from all walks of life.
